WHY HAS TROPEA WON?
Why was Tropea elected Il Borgo dei Borghi 2021? We could list hundreds of reasons but we have selected a few! Here are three reasons to visit Tropea:
The historic center of Tropea, about 70 meters above the sea, is a set of alleys, streets, churches, noble palaces. Not to mention the panoramic terraces and the incredible views of the blue sea that suddenly open up while walking: this already explains why Borgo dei Borghi 2021 was elected! Tropea welcomes you with the silhouette of the Sanctuary of the Madonna dell’Isola, which is located on a cliff overlooking the Aeolian Islands. Just outside the historic center, in a silent citrus grove, there is a deconsecrated church: the church of Santa Maria della Neve. It keeps its works inside and is also open to the public for conferences and concerts: an extremely fascinating place.
Beaches and sea
Undoubtedly, the crystal clear sea and white sand are a strong attraction for summer relaxation. But also to immerse yourself in these waters rich in vegetation and animals and admire their beauty. Tropea is located on a stretch of coast called the Riviera degli Dei for the beauty of the area that alternates long white beaches with rugged cliffs, so much so that some beaches can only be visited by sea.
The red onion IGP is the most famous product of Tropea. It is sweet and presents a unique flavor. Have you ever tried the onion tart? The onions are flavored with local pecorino, pepper, eggs and become the filling of a homemade shortcrust pastry! Furthermore, in Tropea there is excellent fresh fish, in particular swordfish and grilled tuna. Among the first courses are the spaghetti with sardines! In the mountains surrounding Tropea, people produce cold cuts and cheeses. Among these the pecorino di Monte Poro, a Slow Food presidium: fat, tasty and scented with mint. In short, there is something for everyone!
