Our small island is the metaphor of many communities that have rediscovered pride in their territories.
With these words, the mayor Ambrosino comments on the victory of his city. Procida, the jewel in the Naples Gulf, has been named Italian Capital of Culture 2022.
Procida now has one million euros to carry out his project entitled Procida, La cultura non Isola (Procida, culture does not isolate). As you can read on the procida2022.com website, it includes 44 cultural projects, 330 days of programming, 240 artists, 40 original works, 8 spaces cultural regenerated!
ITALIAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE: THE INITIATIVE
The project was born in 2014 with the aim of protecting the cultural heritage and relaunching Italian tourism. Each year the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism chooses one or more cities according to the projects presented. In fact, this recognition does not go to the “most beautiful city or city rich in history”, but to the best projects for the cultural enhancement of the area.
For the year 2020/2021 the Italian Capital of Culture was Parma (double year due to the pandemic); the 2023 Italian Capital of Culture will be Bergamo and Brescia; for 2022 it is the first time that the recognition goes to a village and not to a provincial or regional capital: Procida has in fact just over 10 thousand inhabitants and an area of only 4 km2.
PROCIDA: THAT’S WHY IT WORTH A VISIT
Half an hour by ferry from Naples, it seems to disembark on an island where time has stopped. Hanging clothes flutter in the warm wind showing the plaster of colored walls and the crystal clear sea glistens in the sunlight. It seems to enter a painter’s palette; Procida is a picture, made up of leaning houses, narrow alleys, fishing boats and dream coves.
This magical place is not only loved by tourists. Writers and film directors loved it. The writer Elsa Morante set her book L’isola di Arturo here. The director Massimo Troisi shot several scenes for Il Postino.
